The article represents analysis of theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of violence and war which are contained in the works of Russian and French military theoreticians, philosophers, sociologists, and historians. This article is based on the study of original sources in of twentieth century. We show the development of views on the war as a specific form of social violence. We gives a detailed enumeration of French and Russian researchers, involved in fundamental questions of war and armed violence, in detail stopping on the certain theories. Particular attention we paid to the development of the science of war in the periods before the World War I, and after the World War II, to the establishment of sociology of war and of the polemology in France, as well as to concepts of national interests in Russia and France. In this context we consider some works of F. Dostoevsky and Vladimir Solovyov as well as activities of Nikolai Golovin, J. Freund, R. Girard, and of the representatives of the Soviet military and scientific schools (A. Snesarev, M. Frunze, M. Tukhachevsky, D. Volkogonov, M. Gareev, I. Danilenko, and S. Tyushkevich). A comparative approach contained in the article, gives an opportunity to follow the development of research in this area in both countries. The content of the article suggests that the study of war and violence in France and Russia are similar to each other, although for the Soviet period of Russia's development was characterized by a high level of ideological component in science.
