Исторические события конца прошлого века приводят к необходимости переосмысления понятие национализм, как необходимого явления. Концепция израильского философа под названием «либеральный национализм» — это попытка объединить идеи о необходимости права на личную свободу и принадлежности к культурному сообществу. Целью данной работы является рассмотрение теории либерального национализма, в частности, тезисов о важности культурных прав и связи индивида с нацией, а также реконструкция ключевых критических аргументов..

Yuli Tamir’s Concept of Liberal Nationalism and Its Critics

The last 30 years of the 20th century faced different changes, such as the destruction of socialistic and colonial systems. As a result, the problem of nationalism became an important topic in modern political philosophy.
In this paper, using conceptual, source and discourse analysis, I examine Yuli Tamir’s concept of liberal nationalism and to reconstruct key critical arguments of this theory. The first part of my research dwells upon the understanding of the concept of both individual and group rights. The aim of the second part raises the problem how to investigate the importance for individuals to understand his belonging to the concrete nation. The third part gives the critical arguments against the concept prescribed. In my article, I expect to have the following outcomes: the key features of liberal nationalism and critical arguments against the theory. Yuli Tamir views the democratic ideas and attitudes society may have as a condition to create the liberal-nationalist community. The use of national identity as a foundation for a democratic community does not seem quite possible here. The Tamir’s concept of liberal nationalism is an example of the view from the other angle, since I try to explain how it is possible to correlate the ideas of liberalism, in particular, ideas about free will of the individual, with the idea of the necessity to belong to a particular community.
I conclude that the main target for criticism of liberal nationalism was the understanding of the right to choose a national identity, since it is precisely in the real world that it engenders various conflicts and contradicts the ideas of liberalism. This, as well as the understanding of modern man as an individual that puts the interests of his nation first, constitute the main body of Yuli Tamir’s concept criticism.
