Частные книжные коллекции, особенно когда в них собраны современные издания по отечественной истории и культуре, тем более, истории и культуре такого знакового региона, как Крым, отражают происходящее в стране и сопредельных государствах «в режиме реального времени». Если же это издания с автографами, то перед нами — свидетельства не только личного отношения авторов к собирателю библиотеки, но и процессов в социальном пространстве, от микросоциального (межличностных отношений) до макросоциального, в котором личности дарителя и адресата дара (книги с автографом) «вписаны» в макрорегиональные социальные взаимодействия и отношения. Данная статья посвящена личному книжному собранию профессора Крымского федерального университета им. В.И. Вернадского, заведующего кафедрой исторического регионоведения и краеведения, доктора исторических наук, профессора А.А. Непомнящего и представляет авторский взгляд как на вышеназванные аспекты, так и на некоторые проблемы личных книжных собраний в современной России.

Since the libraries of the Ancient World, collecting books is an integral part of world culture, its foundation and the most important ‘substrate’ will remain so even with the transition to digital media. Private book collections indicate not only the characteristics of the book collector, especially when he is a historian, but also social spaces of both the professional community to which he belongs and country in which he lives and whose history he studies. The study of such book collections in real time mode, especially in periods of significant sociopolitical and sociocultural changes, is of particular interest from the point of view of sociology, social psychology and cultural studies. In addition to this, I’ll note the fact that in the Soviet epoch, the authorities discourage professional book collecting, considering it as ideologically harmful. In the post-Soviet period, this traditional Russian culture form of collecting again returned to social practice, which makes it an interesting scientific task to identify and analyze the composition and social aspects of the phenomenon of private libraries in Russia.

The subject matter of my paper is owner’s library of Professor Andrey Nepomnyashchy, who is the leading modern historian of the Crimea, the founder of his own school of Crimean studies known both in Russia and abroad. For my research goals, I used narrative approach, conceptual and source analysis combining with method of analytical reading.
Although the earliest edition in this private collection is the Crimea guidebook of 1914 and the oldest part of editions belongs to the 1920s—1930s, Professor Nepomnyashchy’s library helps to restore link between modernity and recent past, traditionally little respected in Russia (for the most part, ones prefer to anathematize this past or to relegate it to oblivion as a ‘tragic mistake’) already by the mere fact of its existence (and constant accumulating).

Already from these edition from Professor Nepomnyashchy’s library, one can indicate the main priorities for the Crimea inclusion in the space of the Soviet state in the 1920s—1930s, which are as follows: (i) general idea of the economic and cultural potential of the Crimean Peninsula as a newly acquired resource of workers and peasants power (in the first years after the annexation of Crimea to Soviet Russia in 1920), (ii) cultural (archaeological, historical, literary and ethnographic) heritage in the late 1920s, that were the period of the greatest socio-cultural freedom in the entire history of Soviet power; (iii) politically (ideologically) neutral or political-propagandistic aspects of the recreational opportunities of the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic and Crimean ideologically significant cultural symbols (such as Alexander Pushkin, Leo Tolstoy, heroes of the 1854—1855 Siege of Sevastopol, etc.) in the late 1930s. Prof. Nepomnyaschy’s book collection not only helps to return “the times into joint”, it is itself a kind of modernity expression. This is not just a collection of modern publications covering the whole range of Crimean studies and related researches, which were sold out in significant print runs and became a rarity almost immediately after leaving the printing house (monographs on the history of Crimea and Crimean historical periodicals, Crimea guidebooks and serial publications about Crimea, both local and published outside the Peninsula, oriental studies, especially Tatar studies; books about Crimean scholars and Crimean studies institutions, proceedings of the conference, and other unique small editions). These are, first of all, publications allowing to see the ‘human faces of the Crimean history’, to penetrate into the essence of human relations between scientists, to see them in daily communication with colleagues, teachers and students, with family members and officials.

More than 800 publications from A. Nepomnyashchy’s book collection have the gift inscriptions. Autographs of his Russian and Ukrainian colleagues, students and officials turn out to be evidence of both his scientific, pedagogical and collecting activities and the processes in the sociocultural space of the Crimea, Russia and Ukraine.

I conclude on the need for financial and organizational measures aimed at greater openness of private research libraries, at helping book collectors and researchers of their collections.
