Plant products expansion is one of the urgent problems of modern pharmacology and health care in general. Types of plant raw materials used in medicine for many centuries, but undeservedly forgotten hold a special place here. A special place here belongs to the. Such raw material is the iris root used in Western European and Russian medical practices. Currently, this raw material is not a pharmacopoeial in the Russian Federation; however, it is included in a number of leading foreign pharmacopoeias. So, in particular, despite the status of rhizomes of German iris (Iris germanica L.) as a pharmacopoeial raw material in Pharmacopée française, 10ème éd. (1982), British Herbal Pharmacopoeia, 3rd and 4th eds. (1991, 1996) and British Pharmacopoeia 2008 (2007), Indian Pharmacopoeia (1996), Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China (2005), European Pharmacopoeia, 6th ed. (2007), American Herbal Pharmacopoeia (2008), Deutsches Arzneibuch 2008 (2008), and Japanese Pharmacopoeia, 15th ed. (2009), in the Russian Federation, this promising raw material is not officially recognized. This determined our choice of the pharmacognostic analysis and macrodiagnostic indicators of rhizomes and leaves of Iris germanica L. as research subject.
In the theoretical part of our research, our source analysis (as a part of pharmacognostic analysis) revealed a significant biological activity of German iris organs and dosage forms from it, such as: immunomodulatory (in experiment), hypolipidemic, antiulcer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, inhibition of cytochrome P 450 1A activity, cytotoxic activity against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma cells, activity against cell line A2780 and K652, activity against SW48 cells (extract of the underground part of Germanic iris also prevents the migration of HeLa cells), antibacterial and antifungal activity of extracts of the underground part, antimalarial, phytotoxic activity of petroleum-ether extract of the underground part, and molluscicidal activity of the chlorophoric extract of the underground part.
In the practical part of our research, we planted a part of the studied rhizomes of the German Iris in the ground, where they remained until the formation of the developed aerial part. This part we also used in research for the production of raw materials "Leaves of German Iris". We carried out (a) a visual observation, and we described the results of which (morphological features of studied raw materials) in accordance with the requirements of the State Pharmacopoeia of the Russian Federation, the 13th edition (2005); (b) determination of the preliminary qualitative composition of both rhizomes and leaves, for which we performed qualitative reactions traditionally used to identify biologically active substances of different groups.
The results of qualitative reactions for determining various groups of biologically active substances contained in the aqueous extraction and in matrix homeopathic tincture from both rhizomes and leaves of German Iris were identical for both types of these raw materials.
This allowed us to conclude that it is possible to obtain matrix homeopathic tinctures on the basis of both rhizomes and leaves of Germanic iris. Moreover, although the current state of the material base of science is not able to give an unequivocal answer about the possibilities of homeopathy, we are of the opinion that homeopathy is an effective method of obtaining drugs based on medicinal plant materials. Therefore, we also believe that further standardization studies for introducing rhizomes and leaves of Iris germanica L. into the pharmacopoeial nomenclature are extremely important.
Keywords: Iridaceae; Iris germanica L.; rhizomes; leaves; matrix homeopathic tincture; standardization; pharmacopoeia; qualitative analysis.
